2017 Fiat 124 Spider Engine Specs and Performance

At the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show, public can see the new 2017 Fiat 124 Spider roadster for the first time. In 1966, Fiat released the 124 Spider for the first time based on the platform of 124 Coupe as a roadster. The model continued until 1982. Now Fiat will release the new roadster based on the FCA’s chassis which is the same with that of the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Starting in 2016, the 124 Spider will be brought back to life with the new Fiat convertible introduced at the Geneva Auto Show in March 2015.

The 124 Spider will not share body plate with its sibling the new MX-5 Miata as it comes with its own exterior styling though they shares the same platform. Yet, the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider is heavier than the Miata with 100 pounds difference. This makes the Miata and Spider roadsters have almost the same power-to-weight ratio.

The Fiat 500 Abarth lends its 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine for the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider boosting 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque identical to Abarth and 36 lb-ft more than the SkyActiv 2.0-liter engine of Miata. The rev range is much lower so it has better torque benefits. Since Miata does not come with turbocharger, the 124 Spider could be the turbocharged alternative you are looking for. The transmissions are the same so there is a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission to choose. The 124 Spider is expected to be able to hit 6.9 seconds to reach from zero to 62 mph before reaching 130 mph of top speed.

2017 Fiat 124 Spider Interior

Unlike exteriors and drivetrain, there is an almost identical interior between the roadsters. This is done due to the very roomy and comfy yet small MX-5’s cabin and budget saving, and not because Fiat didn’t want to give an characteristics of its own to the interior of 2017 Fiat 124 Spider.
