In utility and appearance, the Mercedes S550 hybrid will take competition from 2017 VW Phaeton. The next gen Phaeton is designed to compete in luxury sedans category with reasonable price. Audi A8 is another luxury sedan from the VW Group that will set to be side by side against their rivals. The Phaeton is not a sport sedan but a luxury cruiser instead though it comes with a 6.0-L W12 drivetrain. The next generation sedan will return to the U.S. market after a long break from the states due to low sales. Powertrain options are some of details about the model that are starting to reveal.
2017 VW Phaeton Drivetrain
For the first time, a plug-in hybrid version will be available in the 2017 VW Phaeton line which is the most significant change. The European market already had diesel mill options in the outgoing model, but a hybrid drivetrain will help the Phaeton to compete against the Mercedes-Benz S550 Hybrid. To be successful in the luxury sedans class with hybrid engine, Volkswagen introduced new 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12 engine boosting more than 600 hp and 663 lb-ft of torque. Surprisingly, that kind of power offer still excellent fuel economy with 22 mpg combined.
2017 VW Phaeton Competitors
Volkswagen initially planned to compete with the Lexus LS and Mercedes S class with the first generation of the Phaeton while the BMW 7 Series is taken by its Audi A8. However, it seems that the new Phaeton will be harder to success better than its predecessor which compared to its rivals, the car is difficult to take sedan shoppers to spend their $100,000 for the Phaeton even at a discount. When it is available at the end of 2016, to make it stand up from the rest of the Volkswagen lineup, consider choosing something with some high-tech features and attractive styling when buying the 2017 VW Phaeton.
